Sleeper Berths

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) provide rules governing sleeper berth size, shape, access, equipment, and engineering features.

Size and Shape Requirements

Sleeper berths installed on a motor vehicle after September 30, 1975 must be:

  • 75 inches in length, measured on the centerline of the longitudinal axis;
  • 24 inches in width, measured on the centerline of the transverse axis;
  • 24 inches in height, measured from the highest point on top of the mattress; and
  • Generally rectangular.
