Certificates and Certificate Authorities

Certain websites start with the letters, "http," while others begin with "https." The "s" is an indication of two things:

  • The site is secure; and
  • The user's connection to the site is protected by encryption.
A certificate is an electronic document that confirms that a website is authentic and secure. When users visit your website, their browsers recognize the certificate, and allow the users to perform secure transactions, such as credit card and banking transactions, on your site.
